The Pali word ‘metta’ means loving kindness, an unconditional love and empathy that accepts all living things.
To Theravadan Buddhists, it is one of the perfections, or paramis.
Metta Bhavana is a meditation which encourages us to give metta to ourselves so that we may be more able to bestow it upon others.
The prayer engraved onto this pendant is extracted from this meditation, and is adorned with a perfect lotus or ‘padma’, one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism. The lotus symbol represents the progress of the soul from materialism to enlightenment as a reflection of the growth cycle of the lotus plant itself.
This pendant form is a modern organic interpretation of the ancient form known as the Chinese pi, a circle within a circle. The ancient pi was commonly carved in jade which was considered to have a vital, life giving force: a perfect shape therefore to inform an inspirational piece of jewelry.
