Keep the peace within yourself

Product Description

"First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others." -Thomas Kempis
Thomas a Kempis was a fifteenth century monk, essayist and mystic, most well known as the author of ‘Imitation of Christ’, a book of devotion – after the scriptures themselves it is one of the most widely read Christian texts. He was born Thomas Haemerken in 1380 in Kempen near the modern German city of Cologne. He spent his early life at the monastery of Mount St. Agnes, founded by his brother John.
The latter part of his life was devoted to writing, his motto in Latin: ‘Everywhere I have sought rest and found it nowhere, save in little nooks with little books’
The quotation on this necklace, in its entirety reads: ‘First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others.’ It exemplifies his search for an understanding of spiritual truth which each person must discover for themselves.
The abridged quotation has been elegantly engraved upon a pendant of seemingly contemporary form. In fact, the softly organic and irregular pierced shape has been adapted from the ancient Chinese pi disc, a symbol of nobility and eternity.
