Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) stands out as one of the great political leaders of the twentieth century. A prominent figure in the civil rights movement in the United States, his legacy and oratory have made him an icon of the struggle for human rights throughout the world.
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 was a milestone in the civil rights movement in the US.
The speech given by Martin Luther King that day from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial has taken it's place in history. The words: 'I have a dream', punctuated a series of statements of his hope for harmony and equality:
"...I say to you today my friends - so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream, that one day, this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."
