The United States Air Force Memorial honors the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Air Force and its predecessor organizations, including the Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps; the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps; the Division of Military Aeronautics, Secretary of War; the Army Air Service; the U.S. Army Air Corps; and the U.S. Army Air Forces. More than 54,000 airmen have died in combat while serving in the Air Force and these historical service arms of the military, the second highest of any of America’s four armed services.
Located on a promontory in Arlington, Virginia, overlooking the Pentagon and adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, the Air Force Memorial is easily seen on the skyline of Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia in Arlington county.
Air Force Memorial by Samuel Joseph Bacasse, Dulles, VA
A 2nd generation Washingtonian, Sam Bacasse first picked up a camera in 4th grade. In the 7th grade Sam took on a science project which would forever change his life. He photographed craters on the moon and five planets in our solar system. That experience taught him film exposure and development, and inspired him to set up a darkroom in his parent’s basement. He continued his photographic journey by taking photographs for his junior high school yearbook.
Sam attended Brandeis University in Waltham Massachusetts and began to travel around New England, camera in hand. After college, his entrepreneurial leanings took over, and he put aside his camera for about 20 years. In that time he joined forces with his wife, Ellen Paul, and formed a direct marketing business that became an industry leader in data processing and personalized imaging throughout the Northeastern United States.
Sam left this business in 2003 and picked up his camera again, revitalizing his passion for photography. He now devotes full time to travel and study in order to follow his passion for photography both locally and around the world.
All photographs come with a black mat. Sized are listed with the mat included. For example, the 8x10 is a 5x7 photograph matted to an 8x10 size and will fit in an 8x10 frame.
